What gives in this equation?

Still trying to decide which one to get. I thought with it being slimmer it would weigh less (1g difference is really not noticeable)

, there is a common misconception that making modern laptop/tablet devices thinner will make it noticeable lighter. This is not really true, since the materials saved by making it a few mm thinner is extremely low. While e.g. reducing bezels saves more materials & screen glass (e.g. 10% less glass & body needed to fit the same screen size).
While Surface Pro X reduces bezels a lot, it also has a bigger screen (13 inch instead of 12.3 inch), hence the weight is similar.
Still very impressive though and having 13 inch screen in such a form factor is definitely a big plus for productivity work. If you want lower weight, I would wait for a Surface Go-like device.

It might be smaller physically but it could just be that the gizmotry inside is more densely packed, different design decisions, material choice, etc.

You also have more HW inside like the LTE module including the RF chip plus additional Antennas. The normal Surface Pro 7 comes without any cellular connectivity.
Also the Pro X comes with less air inside, as it does not has to maintain an airflow for the active cooling solution, which is needed for 15W+ chips - this makes it heavier per volume relatively speaking.

I think the SPX is interesting for anyone who wants LTE but doesn't require any fancy programs beyond the web browser.

But I also think that with the USB-C port, and not ditching the USB-A port, this is the best surface pro yet. I've been hanging on to a Surface 3 (non-pro) purely because of the USB charging, it's just so useful to be able to take a power brick and not worry about power. The SP7 should allow that, and I think with USB-C, that port will come in quite handy in the future too. Just need to keep an eye out for a USB-C to HDMI dongle. If it's compatible with other USB-C docks, then awesome.

Pricing wise, the SP7 with an i7 with 16gb ram and 256gb storage comes in at $1,500 which is pretty decent spec at that price point.

I'd wait for reviews though, I'm curious to see how the devices perform.
