Thoughts on the Lumia 730 & 830

So with Microsoft officially announcing the Lumia 730 and 830, I thought we'd all chime in with some thoughts.

In regards to the Lumia 830, I was a disappointed that Microsoft didn't opt for the Snapdragon 800 or even 600, but I can see why they opted for the S400. Firstly, Windows Phone just runs well on light hardware, and the S400 + 1GB combo should be enough for everything a normal consumer would do on such a phone in terms of running their favourite apps and games.

Secondly, the Microsoft Mobile division is probably under some pressure to raise the Lumia ASP, hence the reason for selling a phone for $150-200 more than similarly spec'd Windows Phones (from XOLO, Prestigio, etc).

The point, at the end of the day, isn't to give normal users flagship specs, but rather, flagship experiences at an affordable price-point. In other words, it is to bring stuff such as PureView, Qi Charging, etc, to those who can't or won't shell out $600-700+ for a phone. Such people exist, they're utilitarian in nature and view phones as a means to achieve an end, not the end itself.

I honestly don't expect the Lumia 830 to stay in the 330 Euro price point for very long nor everywhere. I think in North America it may end up being sold for around $350 off-contract.

As for the Lumia 730/735, I don't really have much to say besides the hope that a Qi charging back will be made available and that it reaches a price-point of $250-275 off-contract.

Overall, kudos to Nokia and Microsoft for devising a clever messaging point, i.e. the 'bring flagship experiences to the masses.' But Microsoft should go further. It should also drive home the point (and I hope it backs it up in practice) of Lumia phones being reliable and capable, i.e. the phone to get if you value dependability (as you would get an iPhone for luxury and a Galaxy for features).

I understand that recent Lumia models have dodgy QA, hence my concern, but it's possible (my first gen Surface Pro's still holding out, strong as ever!).

Another hope... Microsoft should bring Cortana's passive listening to the masses as well. Doubt it can achieve it with the current 730/830, but it should definitely aim for it with the 740/840.

730 is perfect.
830 not so much. And not exactly because of SD400 but price. All things considered.

What they fail to realize is if a user is willing to spend $450+, he'll probably spend a $100 more and buy a 1520 at this point which gives a lot more bang for buck.

830 should either have been priced $100 less or at least come with either SD600 or S4 Pro with quad 1.5ghz + adreno320

Why Microsoft?

They have removable batteries! Great to see this, especially as the rest of the industry seems to be abandoning this feature.

I hate to admit it but I believe they did make a mistake in using the same processor in the 830 that the 635 has. You can get the 635 for 99$ at the Microsoft store. While the 830 has a slew of other features that the 635 does not quite a few people are going to pass on it (at 433$) because it uses the same processor as the LOW end phones. It should have had at least a 600 series. As the owner of a 820 I think Microsoft has put the wrong CPU in a very good phone.. By the was I still have not gotten cyan/8.1 for the 820

Heads up to everyone in the United States, these three phones 730/735/830 are NOT coming to the USA. These are international phones.

We may get variants of these but if we do I'm sure they'll come many months down the road. I wouldn't expect to see anything this year based off Nokia/Microsoft's past release schedules. Maybe in 6 months...

It is disappointing to see a new high end phone coming to the US. My Lumia 920 is about to come off contract, and at&t doesn't have a direct replacement. My 920 is still working fine, but the lack of the 930 in at&t's stable of phones means that the comparable phone isn't available. The 1020 feels a little old to be buying after two years with the 920, and the 1520 won't suit everyone.

What do I think? I think they left us in the dark yet again. We don't have a specific actual availability date. Do we know of any carriers that have been confirmed? HTC did a way better job announcing and launching the HTC One for Windows. I should've known better.

You're implying that most people even know that. Most people barely know the difference between i3, i5, and i7, average people aren't going to know what the difference between the 400 and 800. They'll just see "quad-core" "1.2 GHZ" and use it and go "oh it's pretty fast" (8.1.1 runs very fast on the 400). So yes, we can scream and shout all we want, but I can say for certain hardly anyone will be able to tell as long as it's fast.

I would also like to point out that that $99 is for the US, and therefore locked to AT&T. The T-mobile version is $130 and the unlocked version is closer to $200 retail. I do agree on the S600 though.

I'm waiting for the ATT variants of course before I make my final decision but honestly the 830 CPU only bothers me because of the lack of passive Cortana support. Other than that it's my ideal phone. But the HTC M8 looks good too

This phone is global and will hitting dozens of different carriers across dozens of countries at various times. The HTC One was exclusive to Verizon, so they're completely different scenarios. All we know besides Verizon is its "coming soon" and that's still only to US carriers. I do agree that they need to fix this problem leftover from Nokia.

I think they look like good, mid range phones, the 830 especially, and will hopefully do well.

I saw the event recap just now and sincerely hope that MS stop with this mudslinging towards iPhones and galaxy phones.
Just bring your own innovations and let the consumers be the judge.

If only the consumers were smart and could be bothered to research into the phone they were about to buy.

Somehow I got the feeling that the regular customer just take advice from the salesman

You are right. And I fear most salesman will recommend nexus5 or motoG over lumias. Nexus5 for better chipset and motoG for relatively cheaper price point. It's a tough world out there for Microsoft.

Was kind of interested in the 730 but it appears it has a Fixed-Focus rear camera. Not so sure now.

MS now have a nice spread of "third gen" devices, 530, 630, 635, 730, 735, 830, 930 and soon to come, 1525. You really aren't left wondering which one to get, there's little overlap. Only thing missing is a replacement for the 1020 (which most people believe is what McLaren was).

HTC is (sort of) back on board.

Plenty of low cost brands coming in for emerging markets.

It's all looking pretty good.
