Too Many IE tabs

I searched the forums and couldn't find any advice on how to stop IE on WP 8.1 from constantly opening new tabs. Every couple of days I have to open my tabs and X out so many of them. I cannot find a way to turn this off in settings. Anyone else have this problem and is there a way to fix it?

I end up with lots of open tabs too.
I just ignore it. They're not doing any harm. You don't "have to open my tabs and X out so many of them"

I remember there used to be a setting that toggles opening pages in a new tab or the current tab - but I think the option is gone.

applications can open IE windows in a new tab instead of the same window, facebook will do this for example. I just x out of IE now and again and it kills everything.

I'm really in the habit now of holding that back button down and killing the apps on the card view about 3-4 times a day. Some of 'em really rob your battery when left alone. (I'm looking at you, Skype.)

Skype has been fine for me, FB is the batter killer for me and I don't even really use it. I think it's just trying to update too much.

X-ing out of IE doesn't close all those tabs tho - and it is annoying to all of a sudden see 15-20 open tabs in IE when you happen to remember to check every few days.
