Google to become Alphabet Inc in shakeup | Top News | Reuters.com

Well, I must say that this was an interesting way to end my Monday. Apparently Google is taking their moon shot projects and other non-successful divisions into other companies under an umbrella company known as Alphabet.

I'm curious to know how this setup will work. Co CEOs usually kill companies and splitting Google into a smaller subsidiary may have just made it easier for the EU to make them split them up even more.

Interesting times!

Man, there is sooo much fun to be had in this. The business rationale makes sense, but holy hell is that a bad name. Did all the bad product naming folks leave Microsoft and get jobs at Google? Also, apparently there is a German company Alphabet International - so an EU based similar named company. Seems like we've heard this story before....

And now, for the fun part:

"Google executives Larry Page, Eric Schmidt, and Sergey Brin announce 'Alphabet', a new parent company for Google's myriad products, at a press conference Monday."

(The physical resemblances are uncanny...)
