Unknown pen with Surface 3

I bought a Surface 3 about 3 months ago, and I order the pen with it. I was surprised to find no instructions on how to use the pen, and as a result have hardly used it. I'm now trying to sort it out.

First thing is that the pen isn't like any Surface pen I can find pics of. They generally have one top button and two side buttons. Mine has a top button, and a "side strip", and the end of that strip nearest the point has a "button like" function on it - you press it and it "clicks". That side button appears to do nothing at all in any app I have tried the pen with.

I tried configuring the pen buttons using the Surface app. Under "pen" I do have the sensitivity adjustment but nothing else. Certainly no options for configuring buttons as shown on various help sites.

What is going on here? Was I sent the wrong pen for the Surface 3? Why are there no instructions for the pen? At least no instructions came with it, and I cannot even find a reference to this particular pen on the net.

I am running Windows 10, build 10586.318

thanks

Richard

Re: Unknown pen with Surface 3

According to the instruction sheet included with the SP4 pen, the "rocker" button is simply a right-click/select.

The top "eraser" button functions as follows:
  • Click once to open OneNote tablet version
  • Double click to screen capture (and save to tablet version of OneNote)
  • Click and hold to activate Cortana

Hope this helps.

Re: Unknown pen with Surface 3

The pen you have is the SP4 pen which works just fine with the Surface 3. You need to pair it via Bluetooth and you also need the non pro Surface 3 metadata from:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/3j2a3u/how_to_fix_surface_app_and_pen_issues_on_the/

If you look in Device and Printers in Control Panel you'll see that your Surface is picked up as a generic 2 in 1, adding the metadata mentioned above identifies the Surface 3 correctly and allows the Surface app to function correctly with the pen.

Re: Unknown pen with Surface 3

Good evening I have the 4 pen with my surface 3. The pen seems to work on in regards to writing selecting ect but it will not show up when I try and pair it via Bluetooth so the click functions don't work. I have tried the above but still no joy. If it helps I have noticed that the light on the pen will it flash when the Bluetooth pairing is happening.

Mine has instruction for pairing:
- auto pairing: click the eraser button for 5 sec & press the pen tip on the screen for 10 sec
- manual pairing: open Bluetooth, click pair, and wait.

Hope this helps~~
