Unlocked Lumia 1020: Text works but no other data

I just bought an unlocked ATT Lumia 1020. I threw my sim card in but the phone isn't recognizing my data package. It allows me to make calls and send texts, but no access to internet, email, etc. unless I'm connected to an external wifi network. I've checked all of my settings (data on, roaming on, etc.) but still nothing. Turned it on and off, updated everything, and still no love. Is it just not wholly unlocked or is there something else going on?

On another note- how do I get rid of all of the proprietary ATT nonsense on the phone (I seriously don't need seven contacts for ATT, or their cloud file storage or the startup globe). I'll deal with all of that if only I can get my data to work, though.

Maybe you need to configure your APN settings based in your carrier. Since your phone is not carrier locked, the mobile data cannot work automatically and that needs to be adjusted manually.

First, could be good idea to call your carrier and ask them about their APN settings, once you get all the APN data you only need to fill the spaces with the info provided from your carrier.

Here is an example how to do it. In WP8.1 could be a little different, but remains the same. This is also a useful info, scroll down until Add Internet APN and you will see the description of the APN menu.
