I was wondering when update for w10 mobile comes out is it better to hard reset than upgrade, upgrade and then hard reset or it doesn't really matter.

The hard reset is the best option if you are POSITIVE that you've properly backed up all data you'd like to save (contacts, images, music, ect.). The new OS and its system files will overwrite the old (and possibly more...), however it may or may not recognize everything else you might have installed on your device after W10 is installed such as older apps or anything you've manually moved to local storage from third party sources. Hunting rogue data after the fact isn't the most enjoyable way to break in your new install.

After hard reset you will lose all your downloaded apps even if you have installed them on sd card.

You have to download all the apps again. (the apps came with the device will remain and other apps you will have to download again)

What if remove the SD card? Will I be able to use my apps after the update?
If you again insert your SD card in your phone or any other windows phone the apps would not be recognised. If you go to storage sense and change the installation of new apps on SD card it will ask to delete all the apps stored on SD card.

In short you will not be able to use the previously stored apps on SD card after hard reset or using it on any other windows phone. You need to download them again.

For what it's worth, after I update, I hard reset and I elect to clean install all the apps (and not restore them). It takes some time, but I don't want any bugs carried forward. Plus, in the process, I purge apps I really don't need any more.
