I made a video with the camera upright but it plays in landscape orientation in all my media players on my desktop computer. I don't see a way to read metadata on the phone to check whether the video was saved correctly and I don't see an orientation setting. Are all videos saved in landscape mode? Is there an app that saves videos as they were recorded? I used the "Camera" tile that came with the Lumia 520.

You shouldn't shoot videos in portrait mode. Videos are meant to be in landscape mode because playback devices like TV and monitors are in landscape. You may have seen videos in youtube or other sites where you have to tilt your head because the video was shot in portrait mode.
