If you don't care about t9 or word corrections but like the "password" 40 key keyboard... here is the cabbed hack... it will uninstall without hard reset. I don't know if it will work on other touch keyboards but it will on the stock touch keyboard.

I've been testing the HTC Touch Diamond Keyboard.

Big thumbs up. Much improved over the built-in keyboard.

The new Touch update ROM has a new QWERTY keyboard. Not as good as the Diamond Touch keyboard (because of my fat fingers), but still another useful option.

Any way to get the screen visable under this keyboard? Blocks most of the screen and end up typing blind.

The Touch Diamond keyboard is the absolute best soft keyboard I have ever used.
It perfect.

Even the two soft keyboards that came with the Touch aren't bad when using T9.

PCM Keyboard with TouchResponse is the perfect storm. Plenty of space from PCM Keyboard, I get rid of the blow up of the letter because that can be too slow, and the small vibrate makes it feel like I'm actually hitting a key. Fastest typing I've had since my treo755p.
