Volume up button not working

Since today my volume up button is not working anymore on my Lumia 720 with WP8.1.

I have noticed it at first when I was listening to music through earphones. At first I thought it was a software issue (phone not detecting earphones properly because I had some noise coming through and I shaked the cable a little to solve this), but now I don't know what the issue is. After I unplugged earhpones still no response from the volume up key, while volume works as normal.

I tried soft reset three times now without effect (and I don't want to try hard reset because I don't trust it with 8.1).

Any suggestions?

you're in 8.1 so you can increase the volume by tapping the volume bar I guess :/ can it decrease the volume?

Hard Reset with Windows Phone 8.1 works fine. If you are scared that it will get back to Windows Phone 8 don't worry it will not.
Perhaps you should try your volume button again when you plug in the headphones. If it works there it's good and if not your button might have broken.

NOTE: Backup before hard reset as it will erase all your data.
