Has anything been indicated as to whether or not OS updates for phones will still have to pass through carriers when Windows 10 for phones goes live? Or alternatively whether or not Microsoft built phones will be able to skip carrier update control similar to how Nexus devices do on Android?

Neither of these two stories I've seen are definitive on the subject:
http://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-says-it-will-be-charge-windows-10-mobile-update

https://www.thurrott.com/mobile/win...-ship-updates-to-windows-10-mobile-for-phones

It appears that only people registered on the Insider program will get to bypass carriers but nothing is confirmed yet

No problem :) If you want to skip the carriers, become an insider, but set your updates to the slow ring :) it will have less bugs, but takes longer to reach you. However the "wait" shouldn't be an issue, if you want a stable OS to use
