So what exactly can be pinned to start menu in Win10?
  • Applications, obviously,
  • Folders,
  • Settings from modern Settings App,
  • Settings from Control Panel,
  • Websites, through Edge menu,
  • Websites, by creating "application view" in IE11,
  • OneNote notes and notebooks through modern app

Anything else? I'm thinking files, shortcuts, emails, contacts etc.

I've seen there were hacks to pin files in Win8.1, didn't try them yet. Is there any way to pin files without hacks? When I drag a file over start icon I get a "pin to start menu" tooltip, but can't actually do that.

Already tried with words files, didn't work. Also tried to drag n drop, it gives you the option to pin to start when hovering over the start menu button, but it doesn't get pinned

The ability to pin individual lighting scenes from Huetro for Hue but you could do that in 8.1 as well

So some things are pinnable through certain apps - I am still wondering what can you do on system wide level.

Edge Website to start sucks, can no longer edit names, select thumbnails. Most of the pinned sites just sit there with edge "e" on it. Doesn't look good.

Complaining here won't help :p there's a feedback app.. go go go

Isn't it that the tile is populated by website metadata? If there is no proper meta, the tile will just have the title and browser icon. At least that is how it works in Win8.1 for me?

For me the sites which worked in 8.1 aren't working, sites like the verge which I presume had the metadata, are no longer showing their icons, however their respective live tiles are working, without images ofcourse.
