What happened to the 640, color it GONE

Fun Fact - You can easily slip in a nano SIM on the 640's card slot and it will work just fine. No adapter required. Just don't push it in too far or off to one side too much and it will work like a charm.

I want to clarify my original post

1) I didn't have Best Buy ship the phone - I ordered online for in-store pick-up at a location on my way home from the office.
2) The Cricket location I went to lost the sale, primarily because I didn't want to spend $29.99 + $25 + tax.
3) I also didn't want to get a new SIM when all I would have to do is carefully place my nano from the 650 into the SIM slot or use one of my readily available adapters.

That sounds scary, but I get why you did that. Whoa.

If it was a physical tray it wouldn't have worked, obviously, and any sort of rigging to make it would would have resulted in damage. I have done this before with a Galaxy S5. Why pay for a new SIM when this is all you have to do.

Ooh okay, I see. Interesting that you had to pay for a new SIM. I just went to my carrier and said that I needed a new SIM for my new phone and I wasn't charged a thing.

BB by me didn't have their inventory up-to-date like yours did (that's what I meant).

Whaaat... I tried to slip my nano into that enormous slot and it slid all over the place. I'm very intrigued at how this works!
Didn't your new Cricket phone come in a box with a microSIM? Mine did, so I didn't have to buy the SIM.. but I did have to call their support overseas to get them to activate the new SIM to my account.

If you are looking at the Lumia 640 from the back with the battery contact on the bottom, essentially just flipped over, place the nano SIM card in the micro SIM slot closer to the top. Don't rush it, just slip it in nice and easy, and it should just go in without moving too much if at all. Once you power up the 640, if you are on Cricket you will get a text message about data settings populating automatically. If they don't, they tell you to contact Cricket. Otherwise, it should be just like any other carrier.

My 640 came with a micro SIM, but why switch to it? I have a 650 that I will freely switch to on an as needed basis. Cannot really do that easily with a micro SIM.

On that note, if you like to rough up your phones, dont count on this, as the sim card is bound to slip out of slot/place eventually over one of those accidental drops anyways. Just putting in my two cents folks. :)

After it's been used on Cricket for 6 months, call in for your unlock code.

I'm not too worried about the nano sim slipping out, but your comments do carry weight and I appreciate the additional information about the sizes of SIM cards. I'll reluctantly use a sim adapter to ensure I don't get an immediate loss of connectivity. I know they aren't perfect and could cause damage if improperly used, but I guess it's better than going naked.

I've found that SIM adapters which have a sticky plastic sheet over the well that holds your nano are very reliable.

Adapters that are just donuts allow the SIM to shift and that does lead to jams.

I ordered the Sadapter brand sim adapter from amazon. No sticky part to get grimy, very snug fit, and width is on par. The plastic is very sturdy as well so it is not so flimsy it bends or breaks easily.

Where I live, old sim cards were duo cards (mini & micro) and new sim cards are trio cards (mini, micro & nano) - break out the size you need. Our tablet uses micro sim and 4G USB stick mini sim -> with a piece of tape, mini sim frame becomes an adapter for the micro sim ;)

Nano sim in bigger sim slot - should work with 640 (untill dropped, perhaps), but in a phone where the slot is not open from side, getting the card out might be lots of fun ;)

you can try gmunlocker.com
they charge less than $10 for the unlocking code
it may take about 3 months from the date of purchase before IMEI of your phone becomes available for the unlock.
