What is GPS? Would it require cellular connection? How much data usage?

I had a Nokia 5800 express music prior to this phone, so I don't know much about GPS.

There are many apps that track your fitness and use GPS.

My question is: how much cellular data usage per minute would be there if I used GPS? How does it work?

Thanks.

GPS is separate from cellular and WiFi. You can turn off cellular and WiFi and still get GPS signal.

GPS is to get location information of your phone and it's separate from data usage but if you use mapping apps data will be used to get maps if you don't have maps downloaded already. And dude as far as I remember even 5800 had GPS.

I was recently trying to locate myself in a train to find where was i at that point of time by keeping in flight mode and location turned on, and it failed until i turned flight mode off although mobile data 2g was off. Is it fine but as i know it should work even in flight mode as i had all the required maps of the region where i was.
Else its just it take help of mobile tower also to accurately position.
