What's the best device to try out Windows Phone?

I'm going to go with the L920 or Samsung Ativ S or S neo. You will find them around $200-300 on eBay. Despite being older phones, they are still some of the best phones (Windows or otherwise) on the market, especially the L920.

I'm going to argue the opposite. The 920 is one of the worst WP devices. I went through 5 of them before I got a reliable one. It's also heavy, and has a weird bezel around the screen. You're better off with it's cousin, a 925.

To start cheap I'd go with 925, 1020, maybe even an 820 or 720.

I came across to Windows Phone this Summer after accidentally dropping and smashing my Nexus 4. Picked up a new cheap Lumia 630 for under ?100 sim free. Absolutely love the experience, even though the device has 512mb RAM it's super snappy with zero lag compared to my KitKat Nexus which was a big surprise. So yes, the 635/630 is the ideal cheap way to test Windows Phone. Love singing Cortana, The Keyboard, Lumia photo apps including Auto Selfie using the App/Main Camera, Offline Maps load 5 times faster than Google Maps, Tiles and the design of the phone. Now I'm looking to go up to maybe the 830 or the next flagship if it leaks this side of Christmas.

Perhaps I am lucky when it came to my L920. I've yet to have any problems with the device besides the quirks that come with using DevPrev. So from my experience I would still say the 920 is worth it, the 925 wouldnt be bad either but the 920 you will find cheaper.

What phone did you have on WP prior? that will help determine what people should recommend. You seem to want a higher end WP, how much are you willing to spend cash wise?

Sorry for the late reply. The phone I was using before was the 520. I then later used a friends old 920 for about 2 weeks.
