What's the point?

Honestly I bet an online D&D campaign would be amazing in VR. Even if you're just sitting around the table as you characters. I think the ability for VR to take us to another world and make us feel like we're there and completing those actions is the point. Look at everything that has persisted over time as an escape from reality.

We use AR/VR in a variety of ways:
1. Operator training in large oil refineries and chemical facilities. The use of VR allows the user to experience the steps/processes that lead to major incidents - like large scale explosions.
2. We use AR to display risk adjusted data (evaluated within an AI framework) to present data in data rich environments. Sometimes there's so much data that important data is missed, using AI and risk the relevant information can be presented in a headsup display.
3. Construction oversight - presenting the current progress of construction for buildings, plants, refineries, etc.

To name a few....

I am really having a hard time understanding what the big deal is with VR/AR/MR. Outside of gaming (which I think could be cool), and a few other niche areas what purpose does it serve?

Obviously I haven't really used it other than about 2 times with my Idol 4s, and a google cardboard thingy. What am I missing? TIA.

You are missing the whole point really. Right now, VR is good for everything BUT gaming which has still to mature and even figure out itself and what it is supposed to be like. For now most high profile games are more like "ports" than actual VR experiences.

VR today is all about sightseeing, training(simulations of all kinds, from military and aviation, to trains, boats, F1 racing, security, customer service, etc. etc. etc.) socializing online, architectural visualizations, ergonomics, virtual theme park rides, and so many more.

AR has plenty of medical applications, commercial too. From previewing furniture, make up, clothes, and decoration for your own home or car, to evaluating medical conditions.
