WhatsApp with international numbers

Hi,
I've used WhatsApp a very little bit. Now I have an opportunity to use it for a specific reason as my aunt from the UK is coming to the US for a visit. I have tried several ways of adding her UK mobile number to my contacts, but WhatsApp is not picking up on the contact no matter what I've tried. My brother, who is on Android, says that he's managed to get the contact connected on his WhatsApp.

I've tried putting the number in with the full international exchange: 011-044-[11 digit UK number]. I've also tried without that dial-out-of-the-US code: 044-[11 digit UK number]. Neither has worked.

Any suggestions on how to make this work? Thanks!

"When adding a contact's international number to your phone address book, start with a plus sign (+). Then, write the country code, followed by the full phone number. For example the United States number 123-4567 in area code 408 would be written as +14081234567. (1 is the country code)"

In simple words just add + before you enter the country code and rest of the number :)

Thanks, some combination of putting in the plus sign and a 1 seemed to do the trick.
