When can we expect Skype on WP8.1 built in WinRT

It will be a glorious day when Skype changes from the current Silverlight 8.0 model to the WP8.1/W8.1 WinRT model.

On my Lumia 820 with 8.1 DP, Skype resumes and checks for latest messages in about 3.5 seconds. If you multitask a lot, those 3.5 seconds can stack fast to result in an unsatisfactory experience.

WinRT should make the Skype app a universal one for WP and W8 and should reduce load/resume/check for updates times drastically. Also I don't know if the current app support Fast App Resume (but if it does ... dear Lord). WP8.1 should bring Fast App Resume by default, if it isn't enabled already.

Joe Belfiore said a new version of Skype was coming this summer, after WP8.1 officially launches for more devices. Here's hoping the new version is the WinRT version !

PS: At least I'm hoping for some improved speeds for the Silverlight 8.0 model, in case Microsoft considers delaying the WinRT model until the majority of users are on WP8.1, due to carrier delays.

Considering how slow the dev team is (and will most likely be), I'll give them six months. That said, I do expect Microsoft to really pressure Skype to pull off a WinRT app sooner or later. Their difficulties might've stemmed from the fact that they're working with Silverlight (and the subsequent result: support of WP7 devices, which has stopped by now.)

Yeah, it crashes sometimes. Or maybe its pulled from memory from the OS.
