So it needs the new firmware: 02040.00019.14484.24xxx, as I have the old .XXX.54001 version. But since I have the international unlocked RM-984 I am wondering how I will get my update. I am with straight-talk and I am using their sim card that is using the ATT signals. However, the Mobile Operator number 000-HK indicates it is from Hong Kong SAR. Therefore, will I get the update when ATT (USA) gets it or Hong Kong (Asian)?

Lumia updates are related to the ROM's manufacturer code. In your case, Hong Kong country variant.

One thing I'm questioning is it the carriers holding out or MS, many say the former but not so sure on that. In the past my carrier has had an update within 2-3 weeks after announcement for any device I've owned including WP but that's not the case with Denim, is there something I'm missing here?

Nobody really knows and what is the definition of holding out for example.
If a carrier finds a "problem" then they report it back to Microsoft. So is this "problem repair time" delay due to Microsoft or because the carrier has a "bad" infrastructure which creates the problem in the first place.
In my country a carrier actual released an update earlier than the country variant of the same device.

I'm in the UK and there are three skews of the 830, two are carrier supplied (Vodafone and EE) plus the country variant. Amazingly on the MS website the EE and country variant have no firmware listed but Vodafone has Denim. I got my 830 6 days ago on EE and have unlocked it and I am now waiting to flash it with the country variant firmware, so bloody hurry up MS. How can a carrier update theirs first?

I am enjoying my new phone though. It is soooo much better than my previous WP device, an Ativ S. I don't seem to have encountered the issues others have had yet. But I do want Lumia camera.

Neither did I..
Also don't expect an update from Microsoft in the weekend

So far in Asia Pacific, the only countries that are confirmed with having the updated Denim OS and Firmware are:

Australia

Brunei

Malaysia

Singapore

Taiwan

I was under the impression that all countries where MS released the 830's country variants will have the same firmware, which was the reason I bought it from the official store and not just a reseller/importer. I was wrong.
