Even more, Intel is subsidizing the Atom CPUs, so they're cheaper. However, market conditions can change at any moment, Microsoft has to be ready to comeback to ARM.
Mobile CPUs are becoming so powerful that are good enough for laptops. If ARM takes the lead Microsoft would be at disadvantage not only in the tablet market, but also in the PC market.
Universal apps and HTML5 are neutral, the dependency on x86 could disappear fast for a lot of people. In fact, It can be argued that It doesn't exist already for most of the consumers. Legacy win32 apps could be supported through virtualization.

Windows RT is not dead, It's in a latent state waiting for better market conditions.

WinRT is a platform for app development. The platform used in Windows Universal apps. Which run on the Windows 10 preview & which Microsoft is encouraging devs to use as the best way to prepare their apps for Windows 10. Sounds like WinRT is still alive & well.

As far as a WinRT only version of Windows 10, we'll have to wait & see. But I think MS already confirmed that devices less than 8" won't have the desktop mode.

Well read my whole reply. The second paragraph is about a version of Windows 10 that won't include the desktop (& therefore I doubt it will run Win32 applications) for devices under 8". They may not call it Windows RT but it will effectively be the same thing. I highly doubt that we will be able to run Win32 apps on phones and small tablets and I think it's even unlikely that we'll run them on the Xbox (although it is an x86 platform). So call that what you will but it's the same concept as Windows RT.

Also Windows RT is just a version of Windows 8, compiled for ARM, and that only allows installation of apps built for the WinRT platform. Rather than bringing the whole Win32 environment to ARM devices they just brought the WinRT platform, hence why I started my reply with some info about that, it isn't going away.

The same OS, Windows 10, will run on phones, tablets & desktops. In 'tablet mode' it still looks just as tablet friendly as W8.1 to me, is there something particular that you think won't work?

The battery life. Do you have an 8 or 7 inch Windows tablet? The battery life is like a laptop.
If I want to play music, I keep it plugged in like a PC.

As far as RT goes, Microsoft is done with it. And it appears that Microsoft will be done with tablets running a "mobile" OS, and I think that's a good thing. They're still competing with the iPad and Android tablets, but Windows tablets will have the upper hand as they run full Windows.

Interesting take on this, but have you compared iPad mini battery life to an 8 inch Windows device? Intel is atrocious for that.

It depends on the tablet. It ranges, but some are very good. And plus this should be a big improvement with Cherry Trail, and it would also be awesome to see a Core M 8" tablet

I have a 10" Surface 2, does that count? It gets excellent battery life in my opinion. I certainly don't have to keep it on the charger.

Also I was saying that I didn't see how Windows 10 would be worse than Windows 8.1, and in this regard I don't see there being any difference. Maybe right now in the preview builds battery life isn't so good but by the time it's read for release I'm sure they will have minimised the battery usage as much as possible, they're planning to run this OS on phones after all.

Speaking of battery life, yes, my laptop drains pretty quickly now. Much quicker than under 8.1. I've now gotten the preview on my phone, and my Lumia 635, which was going all day from battery before, now drains to under 30% in less than 3 hours. Not good, but I'm not required to be "mobile" and the phone is able to stay on the charger most of the time. I never need to keep it on my person for more than an hour or two at a time. I'm sure this is something that will be addressed long before the final release.

No, they've been quite clear when the said this:
"We are working on an update for [Windows RT] Surface that will have some functionality of Windows 10."

​If RT was getting 10, they would have said "We're working on Windows 10 for RT devices". The fact that they said it will have 'some features of Windows 10' says enough, it won't be Windows 10.

I think it will be Windows 10 minus desktop. Phones will have an OS. Tablets and desktop will have another. They will all look the same but do less and less as device size (look and processing power wise) reduces.

I have a perfectly running SurfaceRT currently sitting on 8.1 with an empty store and no way to install anything. Hell, I can't even install Linux because MS locked the bootloader! If 8.1 is supported until '23, why isn't MS taking care of it's customers and at least getting Edge and what's needed updated for this tablet?

Hey MS-- if this RT is no longer something you're going to support, unlock the bootloader so I can find something else to install on it!
