Why can I not open my files I downloaded from the internet.

So I have a new computer with windows 10 on it and I am having trouble opening some of my files. When I go online and download a file that my teacher has posted in Microsoft Word format it will download and then when I click to "save" or "save as" it'll let me save it but then when I go to open the file, lets say from my desktop, it will ask me again to "save as". However if I go through Word itself and open the document that way it lets me open the file no problem, so I am not sure what the problem is or how to fix it so I don't have to go through word every time I wish to open up a document that I downloaded.

Try right click on the file -> click "open with" -> select "Word"
