Why can't I buy physical goods with my Microsoft gift card

I was given two ?50 Microsoft gift cards for Xmas with the thinking that I could put the credit towards a pc or tablet but I cannot seem to be able to purchase these with my credit.. I do not own a widows phone,pc or xbox so what can I do with them..
If this was made clear on the card packaging I wouldn't be stuck with ?100 of of useless credit that I will never use..what can I do now..what a great Xmas prezzy for me..?100 given away to Microsoft ..
