Why can't I sign into Nokia account on Nokia N9?

Recently got a Nokia N9, updated the firmware to version PR1.3 and can't sign into Nokia account to access the store, maps, etc. I'm using my Microsoft account because I saw somewhere that the Nokia account had been discontinued in April 2015. Just keeps giving response: Service currently unavailable. I am using Cell C service provider in South Africa.
