I don't get it, This is going to confuse so many people, as the surface pro (1) was just called surface pro

Probably to put it in line with the other, numberless models.

Or pull an Apple, which uses years to distinguish models.

Perhaps they are trying to generalize their product portfolio! Keeping constant names without numbers makes it easier to manage I guess..

Ya, people in the market for a used Surface Pro will need to be extra diligent they are getting what they think they are getting.

It was discussed on the windows central podcast.

Dan and Zac's opinion was basically that it has hit maturity, they've solidified the design, and eventually it will start to get silly with the numbering after a few more refreshes. So looks like they just pulled the numbering now, rather than later.

After all, this current one is essentially no different in form and function as the 4.

For one, the original SP is so old by now that you'd be hardpressed to even find one, considering it was nowhere nearly as popular as any of its successors. Secondly, the design discrepancies between the two are enormous, and you simply can't miss that you'd be buying a 4½-year old device, unless you're being a bit daft and buying it from someone without actually checking it out.

TL;DR: I don't see how dropping the numbers could be confusing at all.
