Why don't the sounds for my apps no longer work?

The sounds for my apps no longer works

I am unable to hear any sound related to any (additional) apps.

In order for us to be able to help you effectively, we need more details about the problem and some information on what you have tried to resolve the issue on your own first.

Is the issue limited to certain apps or does it apply to all apps?

Have you tried playing a sound from your phone, e.g. any ringtone?

Have you checked the volume settings?

Is there something plugged into the audio jack?

Did the sound just disappear or did it fade away?

You might want to check the volume settings of your phone (by just pressing on the volume buttons while dialing some arbitrary number) to make sure that the call volume level is not set to zero. Note that you need to make a call before adjusting the volume, since the volume level setting for calls is not accessible while not in a call.

Have you tried using a headset and check if you're hearing something during a call? If it so happens that the call volume level is not set to zero, it's possible that the earpiece speakers have malfunctioned - a temporary solution for that is to use a headset for calls.

It's limited to the apps which I've added to the phone.
Ringtones are fine, volume settings are ok, there's nothing plugged into the audio jack.

Have you tried performing a soft reset?

Yes, several times. I'm running 8.1 update 2 if that's any help.
