Why I cancelled my OnePlus One order

Forgot to add text. Was going to say that there is nothing particularly wrong with having 4GB RAM on a device if there were no compromises with the bump.

But there is a compromise in adding hardware for the sake of hardware. The OnePlus 2 is suppose to cost $50-$100 more than the OnePlus One is rumors are true. Plus, if it adds the rumored 2K screen, that'll definitely take a huge hit on the battery life.

Smart idea. Customer support is the pits with OnePlus One.

You might get your best bang-for-buck but if you got a bad lemon, you'll regret ever spending 350 on it.

That's definitely a concern. Pretty much the same if I jumped on the Deal Fisher "deal" for the "refurbished (not actually)" Lumia Icon at $250 (Which is now $220)
~$50 to ship for RMA.

Actual defective rate is low on the OnePlus One.

How much more battery consumption is 1GB RAM going to consume in battery? Still cheaper than Lumia 830 lol ........................

If everything remains the same, more RAM = more battery life for the phone. May sound ridiculous, but Dalvik/ART cannot match JVM when it comes to performance

Feels more like a phone wars post then a Lumia 830 post. But if the OPO is so tempting for you, I say go for it. Migration to a different OS might be time consuming, but it's not exactly difficult.

And you are getting your stats/info from?

Well, that is not how I felt when I started the thread, but it's getting there alright haha. It is a nice phone, but I am really putting a lot of faith in Microsoft/Lumia. Would not mind paying the difference.

And you are getting your stats/info from?
Are you cleverly trying to say China has no standards? jk

Small sample size
Straw Poll

Warm/Yellow screen is not an issue, yellow banding (glue curing) is not an issue either. Not the point of this thread.

Fact is we haven't gotten any *new* flagships on WP, and Android has offerings that undercut WP entirely. I thought the Lumia 635 for $40 was a steal Optimus L60/L70 were $40/$50...
The temptation is real >.>

I feel like this is going to get locked soon. Either stay on topic with the original post or don't reply at all.

So the 512MB phone you were talking about earlier was a flagship? Because it sounds like you're saying that phones need 4GB RAM because your presumably cheap phone didn't? Or something. It really doesn't make much sense what you're trying to presumably cheap phone didn't? Or something. It really doesn't make much sense what you're trying to prove.
.

Look like you didn't read the whole comment.
I'll repeat again
Their are no 4GB RAM devices right now.
So, comparing current software with future hardware, which is wrong.

let me simplify it for you
4GB RAM is overkill for WP 8.1 but may be not for Windows 11( may be Windows 10 too)
Windows Phone 8 was runs like a champ in both 512MB RAM and 1GB RAM devices but Window Phone 8.1 need atleast 1GB for offering same fluidity as WP8.
Just in one year RAM requirement for WP doubled.

Who knows may be in next two years the minimum requirement for WP will become 2GB or 3GB RAM

So true

I switched to the 64gb OPO from my Lumia 920 about a month ago, one of the best tech decisions I've ever made. I couldn't wait for the next iteration of WP devices.

I've been waiting for a new Lumia for quite awhile now. Yesterday OnePlus opened orders for anyone, and their 64GB model is $350 USD.
Have been thinking about an 830 as a buffer device, but this phone demands attention!

Specs shortlist
- 5.5" 1080p
- Snapdragon 805 SoC
- 3GB RAM
- 5MP/13MP cameras
- CyanogenMod as stock!

Couldn't help but laugh when I compared the 'Affordable Flagship' to the 'Flagship Killer'. Saving over $100, and the phone is undoubtly superior to the Lumia 830.

Might regret it down the road, but I ended up cancelling the order despite any news from Microsoft concerning a new high model. The OnePlus has a couple of common issues (completely fixable), however I would be forced to migrate to Android. Not exactly a con, but my anticipation for Windows 10 and Lumia is what is keeping me on this platform.

I hope Microsoft has a game changer planned, because devices like the OnePlus make biting the Android bullet really, really easy ;)

If you are on ATT the affordable flagship can be had for the same price as the OPO contract free. Let me know and I will send you info as to where you can buy it from.

Funny that this thread is around. I happen to be one of the ones who ordered the OnePlus One on Black Friday as I have the 64gb model. It was my chance to experience Android for the first time and to see if I like it. After starting with a Samsung Focus and then progressing through an HTC TItan, 920, 1020 and now my 1520; my first time using this phone is way way different.

Maybe that's why after 3 days already I'm already thinking of selling or trading the phone. Now don't get me wrong the phone is nice and after looking at some videos on YouTube I finally got all my apps set up and figured out how to set it up to my liking, the one thing I do like about it is the customization. I love how I can change the notification light to any color and all the settings for the on screen buttons and task bar. It reminds me of when the Iphone first came out and Jailbreak w/ Cydia brought out all those customization options.

HOWEVER,

The one thing that is making me miss Windows Phone is the Live Tiles and how smooth and easy it is to transition between apps. Maybe because it's so simple that it just works and I have no complaints. I kind of don't have time for the whole customization of themes, rooting and ROM thing Android has to offer but it is unique and I can see its appeal. The one thing I hope Windows Phone brings that I like from the OnePlus One is...

Notification light (Like my HTC Titan had but allow me to change the colors)
5 MP FFC (Selfie's are not going anywhere in the near future so give people what they want)
Battery Life (I Don't Know what OnePlus One did, but the phone has been amazing with this I'll expand later with **)
Camera Settings (HDR and allowing just a swipe up/down to add filters to the camera is a great neat feature.

Sorry for the long rant.

** About the battery: I used the OnePlus One today at work like how I usually do with my Windows Phone. I work 10 hour shifts, so with my Windows Phone after all my texting, surfing the web and playing games at the end of my shift I would have about 15-25% battery left. With the OnePlus One I did the same thing even played games longer (Candy Crush pretty addictive) end of the shift I had 53% battery left. Now that is amazing!

But still I miss my Windows Phone 20Mp Camera.

So, comparing current software with future hardware is wrong in my opinion.
People often state this, but in practice they will anyway upgrade to next phone long before SW would require it.
Fine, if you're getting a phone to use for the next five years. Otherwise.. doesn't matter much.

It will because
4GB RAM devices will be available around when Windows 11 was about to launch.
So, within next 2 to 3 years it will already be quite old.

and I think W10 will end of 512MB RAM devices.(seeing current situation specially official apps)
Current WP flagship already have 2GB RAM
I don't think 4GB RAM devices will be an overkill after an year.
and doesn't MS support WP devices for 3 years.

And now..
Comparing OS's efficiency to car engines :

Android is like an old v8..
Powerful, but needs a lot of time to tune it and make it run smooth. Also has huge fuel consumption,

iOS is like a hybrid inline 3 cylinders with turbo and paddle shift car..
Easy, great for basic stuff, with great fuel consumption
(unless you're drinking it's blood), but if you try to do more complicated things with it, you are going to be disappointed.

WP8.1 is like an old 4AGE (Toyota's AE86 engine)..
You are not trying to impress anyone, you know it's potential, it always makes you feel good and has great durability.
Not the most sophisticated technology, but it has never let you down.

Its not that Android is not getting better, but the honest truth of the matter is that the devices need that level of hardware because of the inefficiencies of the OS. You shouldn't need 3GB on a cell phone, really shouldn't need 2GB. I could see those specs on a tablet, or a smartphone that shoots 4k video, but for a phone that is just utter nonsense. There is a reason why WP and iOS run well with 512 MB and Android needs 1GB or more.

Your statement about Android is completely false.

Android has always been at the top when it comes to the most powerful hardware, while most of you would have us believe that is because Android needs that horsepower, it wouldn't be true.

Android run just as well as Windows Phone on the same hardware, I even ran Android on much older single core devices to test this out. Android 4.4 and above is optimised for 512 MB RAM, but OEMs don't tend to use 512 because of the falling costs of memory and the fact that 512 will never provide an extremely smooth experience.

Also Windows Phone and iOS don't run any better on 512 MB RAM. I've tested out Lumia 520, 620, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPad Mini and all of these devices have bad performance at their latest software version. Even Microsoft knows this, that is why the new Lumia 535 comes with 1GB of RAM.

Gone are the days when iOS or Windows Phone could be considered less power hungry than Android, it may be true to a certain extent but not as relevant as it once was.

Sadly I am not :/

Interesting, I guess I thought one step ahead haha. Imagined that I would get bored after I was done tinkering with the phone. Maybe you need to break it in a little more, lollipop unofficial?

Maybe if Android would, suspend every app like WP, sleep in bed with Qualcomm like WP, and impose a ridiculous amount of restrictions like WP there would not be a need for 3GB RAM.
Android devices actually perform faster with more RAM, less need for garbage collection.

You would be surprised how much memory is needed for apps that have 1080p+ content

Android is making laps around WP8.1
