why is lumia 730 having issues connecting to wifi ?

I recently bought lumia 730. I was never able to connect to my home wifi as the router channel was 9 and its not compatible with windows. I access wifi from laptop using virtual router and one day my device showed problems connecting to it. But connected to my home wifi after sometime. Now I am not able to connect to my office wifi which was previously connected. Can somebody tell me a solution ?

Is your router 'old' ?
does it support 'n' mode ?
older routers don't have 'n' mode which is used by new devices.
in that case you will have to get a new router which supports 'n' mode.

another thing is that lumia connects to a wifi only if it has internet on the network .
