Why is my Nokia Lumia 920 saying no service?

Nokia lumia 920 saying no service

I bought a lumia 920 offline and when I got it I put my sim card in it and it said the card was unreadable. So I took it back out turned the phone off, put the card back in and now it just says no service and goes straight to airplane mode.

Does that SIM Card work with other phones? It's possible that you need to have the SIM Card replaced already, especially if it is already "old".
