Suface and Lumia not syncing Gmail

Read messages are showing up as unread on both the lumia (635) and my surface pro.

My solution for you is to quit using gmail and move to a better and more Microsoft-centric mail service. I would choose Outlook but its your choice. How do you get mail from goog? Pop3 or IMAP?
