Why won't my battery charge?

My battery won't charge

About a year ago I was given a brand new nokia lumia 530. I shoved it in a cupboard and forgot about it until yesterday. I've had it plugged into a mains socket since yesterday but it's not charging. All that appears on the screen is a battery with a flashing charger. That's when anything appears at all.

1. Which charger are you using?
2. Have you tried a different battery?
3. Have you checked if there are issues the battery contacts and the phone's contacts?
