If you are able to hear the sound from the headphones when plugged to other devices but not the 640 and if other regular headphones work with your 640 then its mostly a software glitch. Try performing a soft reset -> Volume Down + Power till the phone vibrates -> then release both.

Are those headphones designed for use with iPhones? Typically headphones designed for iOS work properly only with iDevices. Headphones designed for Android/BlackBerry typically work properly with Windows Phones.
