Why won't my Windows 8.1 PC detect my Lumia 920 8.1 windows phone?

My Windows 8.1 PC will not detect my Lumia 920 8.1 windows phone

Greetings,

I am having issues with connecting my phone to my computer.

I have a fully updated Nokia Lumia 920 (OS version 8.10.12393.890), and when I plug it into my computer (Windows 8.1 pro with media center); the phone will take a charge, but my computer will not recognize it as being plugged in.

I am not the most tech savvy, so am unsure what I am doing wrong.

I have current software from Microsoft, just won't recognize the phone as being plugged into any USB ports I try to connect with, even though the phone is charging.

I am using the chord that came with the phone and it has worked on many occasions previous to the new updates.

is the phone unlocked when plugged in (on, passcode already put in)
