Wife completly turned off by WP

So it's time for my wife to get a new phone to move from her GS4. I talked to her about what she wanted in a phone and all she could really come up with is a nice camera. I let her take pictures with my 5s and while she liked the quality, she said the screen was much too small. So then I had the crazy idea of showing her the 1520 since it checks all the boxes. She was interested in the camera and I really talked her up on 8.1. We decided to go to the AT&T store so that she could see it since we would have been buying it unlocked since we are on T-mobile. The reps didn't really acknowledge us so we got free reign to look at all the phones they had on display. I walked her up to the 1520 and she turned it on. Literally 10 seconds later, she puts it down and says no it’s too busy and cluttered. She had never used live tiles (I showed her 8.1 on my 925 for a couple mins before we left) before because we're an OSX household. I told her that it's customizable and it would look however she put it. She picked it back up and asked if she could get rid of the tiles and replace them with icons and I laughed pretty hard and told her no. She then asked me the question that made me start this thread: "Why would anyone want to switch to WP if they already know how to use the phones the they already have?". I didn't really have an answer for her and we ended up picking up a Note 3 at the T-mobile store across the street. What this taught me is that most people stick to what they know and that in their eyes change is a very scary thing. Makes me feel like the US market will never ever change and that hurts. Thoughts?

Reasonable, not everyone is going to like it. I love WP but I also own an iPhone because things like not easily being able to upload videos to Facebook annoy me (current situation).

That is a big challenge. It's probably why MS is trying to make WP run well on low end devices. They want to go after people who haven't entrenched themselves into an existing OS. People who are new to smartphones will be more open because no matter what smartphone they buy it will be a significant change for them.

Android had/has the advantage of looking similar to iOS in its basic implementation. Someone using iOS could look at Android and think, "I could probably figure this out. A lot of it looks similar."

With Windows Phone, that's tougher. Also take into consideration that if they need help they have fewer people that they can ask to help them.

Hopefully that all changes as Windows 8 starts appearing on more and more computers. If people buy portable Windows tablets or laptops with touchscreens, they will eventually get used to the live tile setup. Then it will become less tough a sell.

Well my gal is totally in love with the NL920 (WP8.1 DP) I handed down to her & just this weekend, she's loving changing her whatsapp backgrounds. :)

Don't feel too bad, I can't get my wife to ditch her BB Bold 9900. Women can be some strange creatures to us fellas. Don't fight it, you ain't gonna win and do NOT try to reason with her, resistance is futile.

My dad gave me the best advice ever when he told me that when it comes to my wife I can either be right or happy and happy is always better.

Well, of course, the answer is obvious. Get a new wife.

Like that's gonna change anything. I didn't see you offer to pick up the tab for alimony and child support. Yes, it's cheaper to keep her - unless you're Scott Peterson.

Keep the wife! Let her have the phone she wants. ;-) I got my wife a Moto X last fall during a sale, and I'd hate to see what would happen if I tried to take it away from her right now!

I love my wife, she hates computers, so she likes her dumb phone. So I get all this data for myself.

My wife says the same thing about my phone, the screen being too busy. I also don't think the resistant to switch platforms is necessarily based on fear of change. It might be in your wife's case. But she brings up a great point: What exactly is the selling point to ditch your iPhone or Android phone for a Windows Phone?

Did you show her she could delete and resize the tiles, my 1020 is set with 3 columns and tiles everywhere, my wife's 920 has 2 columns and about 10 medium/large tiles much simpler than my screen.

The problem is that people are dissing on WP even before they give it a chance! Just buy a Lumia 520 from the Microsoft store for $59 and give it to your wife to test out WP as a daily driver.

I don't particularly care for the tiles. I wish there was a way to assign different colors individually. Actually, I wish I had webOS's notifications OR the home screen from SPB Mobile Shell.

I'd say the answer would be dependent on the person's view of the overall picture of their life and what they want and can get done with the phone. Looking at platform integration as how MS and Apple are pursuing in my mind would be good reasons to switch platforms. Overall, it has to be a significant cause to instill change.

One of my girl friends was so tempted to get the 1020 since she loves to take pictures. She kept telling me that the screen is to busy. Not sterotyping, but maybe girls do like things to be simpler and more busy.

I mean, I'm not proving anything new here. Just watch a woman man and her man argue about home decor.

My wife likes her 925 but keeps telling me she misses her S3 because it's faster... I'll ask her about the times tomorrow and see what she thinks.

Would love to see some statistics on this somewhere.

This isn't directly related to the tiles but I don't feel like I can recommend WP to anyone non-technical, which is weird because it's a very simple, user focused design. For me the issue is that often things just don't work. I've got a Lumia 920 and I have
  • plenty of freezes and resets (more when I first got the phone and less now after firmware & OS updates but they still happen more frequently then I'd like)
  • apps often exit unexpectedly (a problem for the app devs, not the OS but I never had this many issues on iOS & I've had crashes from Bing News recently which is an MS app)
  • mysterious & severe battery drains (seems to be a common theme on these forums)
  • things like Internet sharing not working, sound only coming from 1 headphone, Bluetooth not working and all needing a restart to resolve

Compared to the iPhone 4 I had previously and my wife's iPhone 5s the Lumia 920 is downright unreliable, and from posts in these forums it doesn't seem uncommon for any & all WP devices to suffer these issues. I like my Windows Phone, it has some very nice features & I'll probably buy another, but if anyone non-technical asks me for a phone recommendation then I can't say WP.
