Will the Surface Laptop really last 14.5 hours on a single charge?

I watched the New York May KeyNote and noticed what looks like a battery that spans the entire length of the laptop!

And with the PCIe SSD integrated onto the motherboard?! Genius!

I don't think they ever work as long as the manufacturer claims. That is probably based on perfect setup and working conditions. However, I'd think it would get at least 10-12 hrs usage.

I was assuming that running UWP apps run much more efficiently (battery usage) than 32-bit apps. If you ran the same (store) apps on both, I'd think they'd be more or less of equal efficiency.

As to the note on manufacturer claims, I think it's just the reality that you cannot say "how long does a battery last" with accuracy unless there is a context to it like "how long does the battery last when looping a specific video (or running some very specific task)." It sucks though, kinda feels like auto manufacturers' MPG claims from 10 years back.

That claim is undoubtedly for it running Windows 10 S. Running Pro and win32 apps will get you less battery life. The question is how much though. We won't know until it's out and people can test it.

I believe windows 10s which only capable running store apps could run much longer than windows 10 home/pro. UWP app seems more lightweight compared to win32 app.

I believe windows 10s which only capable running store apps could run much longer than windows 10 home/pro. UWP app seems more lightweight compared to win32 app.

This, plus there won't be any Win32 apps out there to start processes on the launch, plus the screen resolution is lower than the one on Surface Pro 4 so I believe it should be pretty close to the claimed amount of up-time.

Well, 10S would definitely be lighter, but if you play games all day it'd still not last as long.

It always depends on what you actually do.

I don't care what company it is selling a laptop, they ALWAYS give the best-case scenario. It will have a great battery life, but 14.5 hours?

I think no, because I didn't see a laptop running upto atleast 10 hours and I also think that 14.5 hours standby is when the laptop is not used at all.

I don't think so. If it lasted 14.5 hours doing nothing, it would be quite inefficient at throttling and ramping down various functions, as the battery is most likely larger and the computer more efficient than my SP3. My SP3 sitting and doing nothing will last more than 13 hours (because simple maths: it usually ramps down to around 3-3.2W in idle, and the battery is 42Wh giving it more than 13h in idle).

Hello. I personally don't think it will last 14.5 hrs unless perhaps you are doing nothing but browse the web or something similar. I'm assuming that if you use it to work or play games the battery life will be a lot shorter. Hopefully it's not that far from what they claim, personally I will still be extremely impressed if after using that computer to run heavy duty programs or games it lasts around 8-10hrs.

Battery life is definitely one of the greatest features of this device. However, I would expect it to last somewhere around 9-10 hours with heavy use. So, yeah basically depends on what you aim to do with the laptop!

hey sam i agree with you. the "up to" 14.5 hours battery life is the baseline for everyone. its much easier to make a baseline that is based off the most basic of users (edge, low brightness, other simple uses) than base it off of say, a graphic artist or med student or video editor. the battery life for those users will be WAY different.

These battery claims are at low to mid screen brightness and low cpu load like watching videos indoors.

Push the processor or use max screen brightness and expect much less.

Yea thats ideal conditions and prob while sticking to windows 10s. Still if the claims are even somewhat close in day to day use, then that would be great.
