I recently bought a laptop with windows 10. All seemed OK but then I let it update. It downloaded about 3GB of updates and produced some error messages, including a notification saying that there was a disc problem, click to repair. I did and it didn't. Windows now boots but doesn't get to the desktop screen. Instead it goes into repair mode but none of its options work. Resetting your PC results in 'There was a problem resetting your PC' There's lots of room on the disc. What do I do?

Here's a tip if you can't get into the Advanced Startup mode!
If your PC isn’t loading Windows 10 and you don’t have the operating system installation files, you can use the following trick.

Start your computer and follow the POST, when Windows should begin loading, press the power button to shutdown your computer.

Repeat the previous step twice, and in the third restart the operating system should enter into the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE), where a number of diagnostics will be performed to try fix any booting issues, but you will also get an option to access the Windows Startup Settings.

Thanks for the help but I can't get it to work. I run a dual boot system with Linux, which I'm using to type this. I don't know what I've done but now when I boot up windows, it just has a blank screen for a few seconds and then does a restart. When you say ' follow the POST' what exactly is that?

Hi! POST Power ON Self Test! What is POST? Can you boot into safe mode?? Can you get into the BIOS?

If you can't get into Advanced Startup, you may have to do a clean install. You could create a system repair disc. How to Create and Use a Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc in Windows 8 or 10
Here's how to do a clean install! Sorry if you don't understand any of the above, you probably should visit your local repair shop!

I would be happy to help you. If you answer my questions,I would try to help you get Windows fixed. I don't know your Windows knowledge, so hard for me to find a starting place. Turning your PC on and off 3 times just before POST should get you into (Windows RE) From there, there are several ways to recover your operating system.

Thanks so much for all of this. I can get into the BIOS but nothing else. Probably a clean reinstall from a downloaded .iso is the answer (or take it to a shop, as you suggest!)

Hi A clean install is easy. You can do it! I'm usually hanging around here and would be happy to help any way I can. It would be nice if you could boot into the (Windows RE). I have the media creation tool on a PNY flash 16GB and it works like a charm. Don't worry about the license. If you had W10 installed, Microsoft has it recorded and you can activate latter. Just skip that part when using the tool! Good luck. Let me know how things go for you!
PS You may have to go into the BIOS and change the boot order!

Hi Thanks for your reply. I'm glad it worked for you. You just made my day. Don't be a stranger and come back often. Not sure what all you did.
If you have time, please explain it so other members will benefit from your experience.
Thanks!
