Windows 8.1 and WP 8.1 compatability

Hi,
I have my laptop running Windows 8.1 and now have a Windows 1020 phone with the 8.1 update, is it reasonable to assume that I would able to copy a Music Folder from my laptop to phone without having to do it via Xbox Music or MixRadio, tried both of these and it makes a complete mess of it, I have the Windows phone app on laptop but that is just as useless. Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

I just move music to/from the phone using Windows Explorer on the desktop, treating the phone like a folder.

same, it makes reloading the phone after a hard reset easier too.
