Windows 8.1 Email App Getting VERY Slow

I am increasingly having problem where when I try to type a reply to an email, the email app runs so slowly that I can type three or four words ahead of what is showing on the screen (and I'm not that fast of a typist). If I close the program and reopen, it does not help. Today, I even restarted the machine and it helped for about a sentence or two, then again the slowness showed up.

Is anyone else having this issue?
Does anyone know of a fix or do I just hope that Win10 will be the fix?

Just a quick update. I had a support chat with Microsoft (very pleasant and helpful experience-surprisingly), and the tech had me uninstall and reinstall the mail app. This helped for a very brief time, but it is already starting to slow down again. But, I assume since I'm not getting any replies to this post that I must be the only one having this issue. Starting to question if my machine has bad RAM....

If you are not seeing similar slow-downs in other apps, I don't think it is your RAM. I've always thought the 8.1 mail app was very buggy. Mine sometimes closes for no reason at all and I have to re-load it. Since Windows 10 is so close to release, I would just plan to upgrade and see how things are running then.

My mail app will have that same slow down issue when I'm typing a response once in awhile. I just retort the app and the problem goes away. Not the ideal solution, but certainly workable. I agree though, wait till Win 10 comes out and upgrade. I know I will!

What are your push settings? Do you have it set to download mail as you get them? If you have multiple email accounts, that will bog your system down. It's why the email app defaults to check email every 15 minutes or every 30 minutes rather than push instantly.

Hey there,

this is not an Surface 3 issue (at least I think so). I have the exact same problem with my S2 as well. It doesn't happen every time I use the mail app, but definitely often (especially when the mail-conversation is a long one and has some longer mails in it).

If you check for this issue online, you will find out that a lot of others have it as well. Not just on a S3 (like you) or a S2 (like me), but also on other computers/tablets with windows 8.

So I hope for both of us that Microsoft will finally (!!!) do something...

Until then: I open Onenote, type in the reply I want to send as an email, copy everything into the mail-app after finishing typing and send it... No other workaround which works (at least for me). I have tried everything: reinstalling the app, closing and restarting it, restarting the Surface and so on... nothing helped (at least not longer than a few sentences when typing..)

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I am surprised to hear this is a wider problem than just for Surface. My ThinkPad Tablet 2 and my wife's Acer tablet neither had the issue, and our Sony home computer does not. But, this was exactly the feedback I was looking for--something to confirm this is being seen beyond my computer. Now, I know this is unlikely to be a hardware issue with my machine. Thanks so much.

I will try the change to the auto-download also and see if that helps. I do have multiple accounts running.
