As opposed to totally abandoning WP, you should look at the HTC One W8. That's what I'm going to do!

Hmm.. not quite sure what you're arguing. I have the 8.1 DP with GDR1 on my phone as of yesterday and I'm on a Verizon 928.

Either you can install the Developers Preview app and download the preview of WP 8.1 (now updated to Update 1) OR you can wait for the official Cyan update to roll out. Cyan is rolling out to all Lumia devices.
