While using my phone (Lumia 950XL), I unexpectedly had first the Yahoo Mail shortcut crash upon open, and then the messaging app.

I had not knowingly installed any updates, and was using the messaging app minutes before.

My phone's storage was almost full, and I wasn't able to download updates as a result.

After testing the tiles a few times, I was able to open mail, but not messaging.

The messaging tile, and the link from the app list, both directed me to the store (my library).

Now everything seems to work on my phone, expect for messaging.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Have you tried restarting your phone? Have you tried freeing up some space by deleting apps you don't use, or data you no longer need or have archived?

Try freeing up more space on the device storage. You mentioned it was almost full. Did you check to see if there were any updates waiting for the Messaging app. From my experience with Windows 10 Mobile, when apps force crashed when you started them, sometimes it was because there was an update waiting to be installed.
