Windows Phone 8.1 - Why are some of my contacts being deleted?

Windows Central Question

Gradually, some contacts on my Nokia Lumina 635 are disappearing. When going to my account (People), they have been recorded as deleted which I haven't done! I can restore them but this is not the point. Why are they being deleted in the first place!
