Yup, if you squint on a 920, you also see that.

It's really the way it works. The theory is that you can't really fit your notifications into the boxes, so to signify that there's something there, Lorem ipsum isis dolor...

It's been that way since WP7, but it never was big enough to notice before unless someone had really great eyesight.
