If I remember correctly, back in the 90's (maybe started as far back as the late 80's) Apple went after the school kids, and made their PC's very attractive to the Schools around the world, now those kids are young adults and are very familiar to the brand - just like kids that grew up in a Ford/Chevy/Dodge/Harley family are pretty much brand bias, I think so is the Apple gen. So, as people feel they need to be different from everyone else (and they will), they will look for an alternative.
If Windows were to market to the independent thinker, the schools, the business market; keep creating innovative products (PRIVACY, security, camera, video, sound recording, compatible BT devices, etc.); pay a signing bonus (against future sales) to GOOD developers, I believe their market would grow quicker - and; position its' self as the "only" alternative.
