When I came to switch my 820 off I pressed the power button then slide the screen down it just froze up, when I slide it to the bottom, how can I get my phone back, can I just take out the battery.

Yes you can do a battery pull or just hold down the power and volume down button together until the phone vibrates.

I wish I did but no. The only assumption is that maybe one of your apps is corrupted. It has happen to me a few times. You could do a hard reset or use Nokia Recovery Software and do a fresh install of your firmware but that's entirely up to you.
