"While Russian leaker WZor says that Windows 9 could be available completely free of charge for those running Windows 8.1, Microsoft watch Mary Jo Foley reveals that Redmond is actually planning an even more exciting strategy to bring more users on the new OS version.

Both Windows 8.x and Windows 7 users could get access to Windows 9 without any fee, which would basically help Microsoft kill two birds with one stone.

First, the company would boost the adoption of Windows 9 and second, more users would move off old Windows versions, including Windows 7, which continues to remain the world?s top operating system. "

More here, and here.

Would this get you slackers to finally drop Windows XP?

Let's remember a great deal of programs will not run on 8/8.1 . While two of my computers are on 8.1 I still have a system that runs XP and use it as much as my 8.1 systems. Without it I would be missing the use of a lot of programs that will not run on 8/8.1 . I guest I could discard these programs but they are still productive and some of the games are not replaceable.

Got to be really old almost DOS based programs. I run 8.1 and everything I want to run, runs on it. What programs are you talking about that you have to keep XP around to run?
