Would it be better to flash my firmware back to original on my 920 and then load 8.1 or just do the upgrade?

This purely my opinion.

I personally think using the Nokia Software Recovery Tool is the best option. It avoids any issues that may crop up and you start off with a clean install.

However, I know many people can't do this so I'd say, just upgrade and if you have issues you can always use the NSRT if things go wrong.
