Is there way to get wp8.2 on my 1520 and not get w10? From my understanding wp10 is still a mess..?

Windows 10 is in preview, so yeah it is still a mess.

Any reason you are not happy with what version your L1520 is running?

Yeah I will head to forums now.. I ended up installing wp10 anyway as wp8 was running horrible anyway. So Far it's actually pretty good..

I received 8.1.2 by uninstalling Preview for Developers and installing Windows Insider.
Then update and uncheck Automatically download option.
When there is the GDR2 update first uninstall Windows Insider to prevent receiving W10 TP.
So you end up with WP8.1.2
