This blew me away, no doubt the guys at Google who withdrew Google Glass a week ago were stumbling backwards as this announcement was a mighty right hook!

There will be many ideas and uses for HoloLens and many cant wait to get their hands on one.
Post your ideas and potential uses here.

The obvious are doctor training, architects, engineers.

I know Virgin Atlantic were using Google Glass for their first class lounge concierge service, its possible from the looks of it, that could be used there as well for customer service (knowing the customer)...

Virtual 100" TV on my wall; virtual vacations to anywhere; deep sea diving; simulcasting with sporting events so you can view the event from the point of view of the quarter back or the goalie or a racecar driver, etc.; practicing a speech/presentation in front of a virtual audience; virtual concerts.

I'm sure I could think of dozens of other uses.

I tot of so many electronics tat would be made obsolete by this one gadget. TVs, players, desktops, handphones, tablets, mp3 players..... When it gets smaller and lighter, it would be on everyone's head, everywhere. Shopping, food, work, leisure.... Endless potential.

Board games, so you can play online go or chess with your real board (it would virtually display their pieces, and you would use physical pieces).

I really think it would be brilliant if Microsoft could work with an architecture program to develop their software for the Hololens. For example, if an architect were to design a house on a computer software and then export it into real life so that they could walk in the house and change anything that doesn't make the floor plan flow well, like the motorcycle in the video. As an aspiring home architect and one who draws many floor plans in my spare time, I would love to be able to export them and walk around inside and look at the outside to get an idea about the structure's aesthetics. The only problem with this big of an idea is that you'd need a ton of open space to be able to walk around. Although you could also connect the Hololens with the Omni Virtual Reality gaming platform to walk in place, but have the Hololens show you moving around. Another idea, and this is going back to the art, you could collaborate with an interior decorator who is at a different location in your house and they could help you pick the right furniture and d?cor without the hassle of driving to your house and driving back. Maybe even scanning the items in his/her shop and placing it into the room virtually to get a better idea of how it would look.

I showed my sister who is all Apple... (I'm 100% Microsoft), and she was impressed, but not excited, cause she thought it would really only be used for TV... and I just came up with these ideas and I've seen your ideas, so I'm off now to go tell her! hahaha

How about mounting 3D cameras to a drone, and doing a virtual fly-through going places.

Hmm... Tank operators could operate the tank by remote control. Machine army controlled by real soldiers in a remote location that will fight smarter because they can better examine the environment in real time... Yes, lots of uses.

Training Firefighters, Police, EMTs, Physicians, Military personnel, etc.

Virtual gun range without having to go to the gun range.

Virtual golf, and you can still get out for the walk, just not have to worry about breaking the putter or losing the ball in the lake. Do it on an actual golf course.

Real estate agents showing all their properties with walk through including the outside landscaping, without ever having to leave the real estate office.

Car shopping. Check out the features you like and browse models of cars downloaded from the internet, all while Cortana gives you the details about each model, all BEFORE you make the trip to the dealership, so you're better prepared once you get there.

Virtual classrooms, where students can see the teacher's presentation and interact with other students in a 3D environment instead of a flat video where you can't turn around and see what's really going on. Oh, wait while I do a screen-cap of that whiteboard for my notes!

Yeah, the possibilities here are endless.

Ever since I showed the Hololens videos to the kids (2 13 year olds), that's all they've been talking about. The Minecraft content Microsoft included in the demos really got their gears turning!

I, myself was thinking a 3D movie. Not just the holographic screen on a wall, but a holographic movie set with all of the holograms on the movie set right in front of you... Think about that? Like The Hobbit -The Battle of the Five Armies... Imagine the holographic armies marching across your living room, or Smaug flying around overhead, incinerating your surroundings with his fiery breath.. That.... I want!

Wonderful idea!! I keep getting more and more surprised at how many ideas people already have, and they aren't unrealistic ideas for this type of device! Anticipating what other ideas people will come up with. Honestly though, it's only been one day since they announced the Hololens and people's imaginations are already coming up with brilliant ideas, such as yours :)

I'm an interior designer. I'm so excited about the possibilities in our field with this technology. And since my husband is a developer in the Hololens team, I will pitch him that idea.
I was replying to he architect, don't know what happened :(

Clearly some of the comments here lack creativity :p
This hologram thing is so awesome. I remember a movie called "Paycheck" check it out.
Here are some applications for this hologram tech
1. Porn - enough said. This is like a porn on steroids.
2. Immersive map experience. This is Google street view on steroids.
3. The Iron man experience. Now you can touch your word documents, throw them at a trash bin to delete and onto a printer to print. Its a new UI experience unlike anything.
4. Entertainment. Imagine watching a concert almost anywhere where the artist is in front of you. Its like U2 is having a US tour but you can't go see it because its too expensive. But with this, viola. Bono is in your living room.
5. Military applications could be many. Imagine training soldiers to get familiarized to an environment thousands of miles away.
6. Video conferencing - not that face to face meetings will be obsolete but what if there was an epidemic and travel is not an option but you have to meet a client on the side of the globe? This is certainly a new experience.
7. Health applications. A doctor can remotely do emergency procedures but aiding and instructing somebody.
8. Construction and Architecture is given.
9. Gaming - you've seen that with the Minecraft demo.
10. Property - Now you can visit a house or apartment without going there.
Windows 8 was so bad that Microsoft gave us Holograms to make up for it.
I don't think no one expected this specially Microsoft since most people know Microsoft as not cool. Well Microsoft is still the alpha male dragon and it just woke up and took a dump at Google's and Apple's front door.

How about a virtual dance club in your living room, where all the other people dancing are actually other hololens users somewhere else in their own house.

Really, any kind of interactive situation you can think of where distance is a factor.

How about a virus that detects if you're reading/watching something scary and occasionally makes a shadow move in the corner of your vision with accompanying subtle noises? Or a more complicated one to look for key words describing the type of horror movie and make specific sounds/corner of your eye movements to the horror you're reading/watching

Remember the Illumiroom demo that Microsoft Research showed us earlier?
In and around an XBOX One, I can see HoloLens taking the place of the projector/camera from that.

What about "bringing back" our dear ones?
Just this idea alone could make this device a hit.
And then along comes Cortana synthesizing voices and let people talk/be with...

Like, reading maybe? Before you sleep because apparently tablets are bad to look at before you sleep so this could (it might disrupt your sleep as well I don't know) bring the power of the internet (being able to read whatever - apart from stuff you have to pay for) without being unhealthy.

Medical applications are endless. Imagine someone creating a vaccine, they could get to the molecular level and see how things, proteins etc all work together, anything on a nano, microscopic scale would work well, also the large macro stuff like a drive by of the milky way hehe
