I think Microsoft?s mobile efforts are neither waxing nor waning, but innovating on a smaller scale. That its current state leaves users bereft of such things as many banking and pizza ordering apps, combined with the contract-based mentality and the still overwhelming popularity of Samsung and Apple carrier-driven plans, make the platform a target for the Verge and other sites, which in turn are a useful tool for Apple and Samsung marketing. But Microsoft does not need to care about this low brow spin as much as media hype would lead us to believe. We know they have been downsizing and shaping the course of the mobile OS, after over a year of no flagship activity, so the sales numbers are little surprise. Now we have the 950 and 950 XL, updates on the way, and a flagship camera that takes wonderfully textured low light images and top notch video.
