Hi. I have an old tmobile lumia 635. The 512MB version.

The 635 is stuck on win 8.1 cyan - tmobile never updated the firmware to denim is my understanding.

I always found the screen terrible outdoors - unreadable on the brightest setting.

I decided to use the insider to get it to denim and then to windows 10. To my surprise, Windows 10 runs well on the 635. Also, the screen issue is totally fixed. I can see the screen fine now outside in the sun.

So my question is... I imagine the firmware on the 635 has not changed then? Does win 10 update that at all or will it always have the original firmware and then mircrosoft can update the software on top of it?

Has anyone done this with a tmobile 635?

Also, if I reset the phone, will it go back to 8.1 cyan or stay on win 10?
Should i exit the insider program? What is the current version of win 10 mobile?
Seems I am on version 1511, build 15806. Can I go higher than that?

Thanks!

My understanding is that the firmware is unchanged under the hood and is generally left to the manufacturer/carrier to control while MS updates the software on top.

If you reset the phone, it will stay on whatever OS is installed. The only way to go back to 8.1 is to do it manually with the Windows Device Recovery Tool.

Exit the Insider program, if my AT&T 635 was any indication, you won't update any further without exiting Insider.

10586.107 (Version 1511) is a stepping-stone build of Windows 10 Mobile that came out back in 2015 I believe. You have at least one more major update for you in store.

Current version is 15063.483 (Version 1703) but I'm not sure you'll go that far. We will see.

Okay thank you. Even if it stays where it is at it seems to work pretty well so that is good. It really fixed a screen issue I had that made the phone unusable. Thanks again.

Ok I exited insider and I got up to version 1607 build 14393.1480.
It runs pretty good as far as I can tell. Love the call quality and simple pictures of this phone.

Sounds about right, since before I sold my 635 it stayed on the Anniversary update (1607) even after the Creator's update launched (The 17something number I mentioned).
