Better organized apps idea

I've sent this as a suggestion to Microsoft. What do you think?

It will save some space on the list and make it better organized IMO.
 
Seems like it takes up more space side to side and you may not be able to see the app name.
 
If you're going to give up that width, why align the letters with the first item of that letter. If, instead, you listed the letters consecutively, users would have easy access at all times.

Oh, wait, that's the control at the right of the iOS contacts page.
 
It doesn't matter cause you don't have to scroll. By just pressing a letter it brings up all of them then you tap on any of them to bring you where you want to go.
 
Yeah, but sometimes there are so many items with a common initial letter that no letter would show, unless the list "held" the initial letter at the top of the screen (as happens today). If so, what does this idea achieve except shortening the space available for the app name? It sounds like the gain that you're seeking is to make the list have slightly less vertical scrolling. Is this really a problem?
